Backup To Disk

Backup to Disk

Backup to disk, disk-to-disk backup or disk-based backup are all terms used to describe backup processes that do not use tape, but rely on disk-based storage instead. Software is used to copy, clone or image files, data, databases and servers to create an exact duplicate of the source material which can be used for archive purposes or to get you or your business up and running again in the event of a disaster.

The advantages of backing up to disk are that it is cheaper, faster, more flexible, easier to manage and generally more reliable to recover information than tape archiving.

Disk-based backup also allows you to scale your backup processes. If your business operation is small, you may be able to backup to a small storage device and add on disk space. In addition, disk storage is much less expensive than tape-based storage, so it makes it much easier to add on additional storage, as needed.

Since many businesses are required to use tape archiving, another advantage of backup to disk is that you can use it for disaster recovery as a companion to a tape-based archive. Backup to disk gives you much greater access to your information, since it is easier to recover from disk than it is to recover from tape.
