Disaster recovery
software is software that enables a business
or organization to restart operations in the
event of human-caused or natural disaster.
Good disaster recovery software will not
only enable the recovery of data but will
enable the rapid recovery of the system that
supports the data. Unlike backup software,
which requires a functioning system complete
with the backup software that will perform
the file restore, disaster recovery software
can
restore an operating system and data
all at once, eliminating
downtime required to rebuild the system,
install the applications and then restore
data availability.
Sometimes, disaster recovery software is
used in conjunction with file backup
software. The idea is that the disaster
recovery software can restore the system
including the backup software rapidly
thereby enabling the data file restore to
occur. This greatly streamlines the restore
process reducing a task that could take days
down to hours or even minutes.
Another important feature of disaster
recovery software is that it can be stored
off-site from the system that it is
protecting, either by transporting the
backup on physical media to a remote site or
transmitting the data electronically to a
remote site across a LAN, WAN or the
internet.
