Virtual Environments
Virtual Environments
(Or: virtualization, software
virtualization, server virtualization)
A virtual system, such as a virtual
server or virtual desktop, is actually
software that allows an IT administrator
to run multiple operating systems on one
piece of hardware. The virtual machine
emulates the complete hardware. In this
way, you can run several applications on
different virtual operating systems
without interference between
applications.
Among its many benefits, virtualization
allows you to consolidate – use all of
your server capacity without any wasted
space. In addition, it enables you to
test applications without worry about
interference or cross-contamination; you
can use part of an old server to test
without needing to buy a completely new
server.
Another important benefit is that a
virtual system can be used as a standby
environment in the event of a disaster.
If corruption occurs, users can boot
into the virtual environment (which is
temporarily replacing your production
server) and be working again in minutes.
